Jack Of All Trades

I'm a writer by vocation, but there are so many other things that I want to try my hand at and attempt to gain some proficiency in. These interests include learning other languages, jewelry-crafting, gardening, knitting, cooking, book-binding, and more. Not only do I find myself to be a giant-killing Jack in my own life, but a Jack of all trades as well.

JEWELRY-CRAFTING

I began working with beads in April of 2008, designing the necklace you see to the right for auction in the Interstitial Arts Foundation's 2008 fundraising drive. Entitled "And Then She Flew," it was based on a short story by K. Tempest Bradford. You can read more about the piece at my livejournal.

With the advent of graduate school, my number of finished pieces have remained low and so I haven't yet been able to set up a storefront. Below, however, you can preview images of my completed work.

And Then She Flew

The Heart Only Knows One Song

Rarely Pure and Never Simple

The Little Mermaid: Upon Sharp Knives (in progress!)

(Links take you to the Livejournal gallery for the ease that format allows me to provide you with information about the composition of the pieces.)

I have several other pieces inspired by fairy tales (both traditional and contemporary) in various stages of completion.

"And Then She Flew." Necklace inspired by K. Tempest Bradford's "Black Feather" from the Interfictions
anthology published by the Interstitial Arts Foundation. Necklace auctioned to benefit the IAF.

KNITTING

This is actually a handicraft new to me as of March 2009. I look forward to learning how to knit as a way to connect with my mother. Also, the tactile sensation of working knitting needles and crafting elaborate knots in yarn appeal to me.

Unfortunately, I don't live in the same city with my mom and so I won't be visiting her until April to benefit from some hands-on instruction. For now, I'm teaching myself via Sticth N' Bitch: The Knitter's Handbook and online instructional videos. This means that all I've successfully learned so far is how to do a double cast-on. Here's to learn a knit stitch!
